“shaping the next phase of going global”

The outbound expansion of Chinese companies has definitely entered a new phase, with the next few years expected to mark a significant acceleration and widening of the international drive of Chinese corporations.

2014 will presumably be the first year when Chinese investment outflows will surpass FDI inflows. The Chinese government took a major step at the end of 2013 to liberalize the regime for outbound investment, drastically simplifying the approval system which until now had been a major obstacle for Chinese corporations planning to invest abroad.  In the future, Chinese outbound investments up to US$ one billion will just have to be filed with the relevant authorities instead of seeking approval through an arduous process. The only exceptions being related to “sensitive” countries or industries.

While a number of modalities have still to be worked out in 2014, such as defining the  “sensitive” countries or industries, the signal from the Chinese authorities is quite clear: A strong encouragement of the outbound drive of Chinese companies, recognizing that the time has come for many of them  to expand their footprint outside the mainland, to acquire the technologies and management knowhow that will help them improve their competitiveness domestically and internationally and to become global players - thus contributing to the further development and maturation of the Chinese economy.

By the end of 2013, the total of China’s non financial direct investment abroad has reached US$ 525 billion and the overall total if Chinese investment - including the financial ones - stood at US$ 750 billion. Chinese investors are now present in 153 countries around the world. What started as a drive to secure energy and commodities resources has now expanded to almost every sector of economic activity.

The China Outbound Forum mission

Created at a very timely moment when the drive for overseas expansion of Chinese companies is entering a new phase, The China Outbound Forum differentiates itself from existing conferences which are more focused on promoting overseas investment locations. It is designed to support Chinese companies as they consider expanding their activities internationally - while attracting also mainland companies now well established at the global level. The Forum is a platform bringing together Chinese senior executives and their interlocutors from foreign companies as well as from other sources of expertise and knowledge, with an agenda designed to cover the key issues and challenges that Chinese outbound companies need to identify and address successfully as they move abroad.

Recognizing innovation and success

On the basis of extensive research conducted with the necessary expertise and academic rigor, the Forum is identifying 50 Chinese companies that have proved particularly innovative and successful in their overseas drive.  A high profile event in the context of the Forum will recognize and honor these companies - allowing also the participants to benefit from the high value of success stories.  A Report on Chinese Company Going Global will also be published a widely distributed to media and public.

A unique forum in many ways
  • A thorough agenda of intensive discussions on the key issues and challenges that Chinese outbound companies need to address to be successful;
