He is the Vice Chairman of China Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA) and the Chairman of WRSA Chamber of Commerce (WRSACC) including for the 2005 Committee, which he has helped to found, and which is the largest chamber for Chinese businessmen trained in the West. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of China Overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce, as well as an advising member of China People’s Political Consultative Conference Beijing Committee.Furthermore, he is an Executive Director of China International Economic Cooperation Society of China Ministry of Commerce and an invited researcher at International Cooperation Center under China State Development and Reform Commission. He is also the Chairman of AEA International Business Consulting Ltd. He is proud to be the guest professor of Business School, China University of Political Science and Law.

Among all these titles, Wang Huiyao favors the WRSACC chairman. When asked how to balance all these jobs, he answered, “I spent four months abroad every year. Busy work demands a reasonable time schedule. In general, I will spend 30 percent of my time on researches, another 30 percent on business and the remaining 40 percent on community activities.”

Human Needs Learning.

Wang listed the time for research in the first place, because human needs learning in the whole life. “There are many ways of learning, for example, books, internet and forums are good ones.”

He spends three to four hours everyday on reading books, newspapers and magazines. He gets up at 7 am and then the first thing he does is to read the newspapers and magazines for international and domestic news. One or two hours will be spent on breakfast and spiritual nourishment. In the noon, he will surf the internet. Before going to bed is another period for reading.

When receiving Tide’s interview, he pointed to The Economist, which is one of the many magazines on his desk and whose cover is written “How to make China even richer”, “I love this magazine and it is probably my favorite British magazine. I can find some new ideas, views and trends from these magazines, thus getting new inspiration.”

Book plays a more important role in his life. “Internet in Europe and US is more developed, but there are many people reading books at airports, train stations and metros. Books are irreplaceable. Reading should be a habit. It is necessary when you want to think or study in-depth. Internet is fast, but book makes you think.”

Wang has three studies at home, 500 square meters in total, but he still needs more. “I pay special attention to overseas reports on China, for example, green house effect, environment protection, international talent flow and enterprise developing trend. It is a hot science in the overseas to analyze China. If traveling abroad, you can see in the bookstores many English books concerning China from different point of views. I have to admit in many occasions that the outsiders may have a clearer view than the insiders. For a same topic, outsiders may think reversely, and show us new inspirations.”

Development Needs Internationalization.

Wang enjoys international conferences and forums and regards it as a way of learning. “I can learn the international trend, the new ideas and inventions of the top scientists via these meetings, as the Chinese idiom says, ‘listening to a segment of a gentleman’s speech is more worthwhile than reading books for ten years’. What a professional forum offers may be more valuable than weeks of study at Harvard’s EDP.”

An international forum needs half a year of preparation and invites tens of professionals. They will lead the topic during the discussions with common participants. “The forum organizers will have phone meetings with these professionals all over the world, to make sure of the topics, content and even slides to be discussed.”

In the first half of 2007, he has co-research projects with three professors and made a speech on these projects at the International Business Administration Forum held in June 2007 in US. “These professors are from Harvard University, Manchester University and American Business Administration Association. They are the best in the field we are doing the research. The forum offers me a chance to communicate with them face to face in a short span.”

He proposed the conception of “The New Chinese Businessmen”, including the domestic and overseas Chinese businessmen. Copying this conception, New Beijing Businessmen, New Zhejiang Businessmen and more were created. Wang strongly opposed such ideas, “we should not divide China’s economy into so many areas, which would make it weaker. What we should do now is to highlight the Chinese businessmen as a whole. Maybe we will have the conception of Asian businessmen half a century later, or even global businessmen. It was a retrogression of history to emphasize the local businessmen. We will hold the 2008 Olympic Games. It is China’s Games, instead of Beijing’s Games. Our athletes take part in the games to represent China, not Beijing.” Internationalization is an irresistible global trend, which decides that each economy will depend on the others and cannot exist alone. “British people always say, ‘think globally, act locally’. A century ago, Beijing people watched Peking Operas only and Sichuan people watched Sichuan Opera only. The tastes of Beijing and Sichuan people were distinctive, but now they both enjoy watching movies. The universe is a whole. Today’s business is a global competition.”

Idea Needs Innovation.

Wang thinks much of internationalization and innovation. To organize communities is the best illustration to his thinking.

WRSA has a history of nearly a century. When Wang joined it, he thought about how to bring innovation into this community. As a result, he founded the WRSACC, including the 2005 Committee. Community cost him a lot of time and rewarded him nothing materialistic, but he enjoyed community, “it is a new challenge and a beginning. Our discussion will render ideas clash and help us move ahead of time.”

Wang regarded his community a brainpower and a platform that suits communication between top professionals. “If I do something, I will try my best. This community will be an influential group among Chinese talents.” His eyes were shining. “Life needs something new, new ideas and new development, despite whatever you do, enterprise, community or university. Human are surrounded by an environment, so you have to break out continuously. Aggressiveness is vital.”

Though Wang is busy in his 24 hours a day, he shows a satisfied attitude toward his work. He spent time on research, papers and a lot of charity activities. “My research on China’s returned students, both practically and theoretically, may take a lead in this field.

Nowadays, I am doing a project on the fund support for start-up enterprises founded by today’s returned students. Even President Hu Jintao knew and signed on my research plan. It will be influential. China has the Cheung Kong Scholars Programme and 863 (Hi-Tech Research and Development) Program. Why not a Returned Students Entrepreneurship Program?”

Fortune and Success Need Diversification.

Wang was quite lucky in his growth. He took a lead in many ways, one of the first students to enter colleges after the Cultural Revolution, one of the first Chinese executives in international groups, one of the first Chinese MBAs, one of the first to be the representatives abroad…

When asked about fortune, Wang thought fortune should be diversified. Experience is fortune; knowledge is fortune; friend is fortune; and family is fortune. It is too narrow-minded to define fortune by money only. “We should learn how to accumulate diversified fortunes via the fortune ‘money’. My biggest and most treasured fortune is my rich experience. I will advise the youngsters that ‘please accumulate your knowledge and experience first and then consider how to increase your money’. A clever head is as important as – if not more important than– a large amount of money.”

Success is also diversified, in Wang’s eyes. You should be responsible for your family, staff and our society and live a reputable, quality and experienced life. “Your own success is not everything. You should check how many people are influenced or inspired by you.”
